BON SAI HYOU
Sometimes a client comes along with such an interesting brief that you just know straight away it will be quite wonderful. Case in point the Bon Sai Hyou (bonsai table).
The brief presented to me was this: a coffee table that brought the outdoors in, had different elements and required spaces that could be used differently.
It took some time to finalise the design, because when using such different materials, the transitions between them really had to be considered, otherwise you can run the risk of a disjointed result.
We hand selected the recycled Stringy-bark as the timber for its strength as well as its appearance, having spent a previous life as bridge timbers. Along with laser cut cold rolled steel, hand finished and clear coated. The re-purposed industrial bins fulfilled the last part of the brief and allows the client to interchange different plantings depending on the seasons.
I am always grateful to have clients who dare to take risks and put faith in me as a craftsman to create what’s in their head.
