The Flying Buttress.
(arc-boutant, arch buttress)
Definition: A flying buttress is an elegant solution which gives lateral strength from the forces of the vaulted ceilings in the form of an arch extending from upper walls of cathedrals in Byzantine & Romanesque Architecture.
Applying that principal was the original inspiration to create the flying buttress.
A desk, created from a minimalist steel structure with angle braces placed to transfer the central weight of the Tallow-wood to it’s anchor points. With no horizontal structure to support the Tallow, it in itself has becomes the lateral support.
The recycled Tallow-wood once served as structural members of a railway bridge in northern New south Wales, so it is rather appropriate that it is still being used as an engineered element in this desk.
