The Secret Wall: A little bit of intrigue goes a long way.
It has become a favourite movie moment: a wall, seemingly covered in bookshelves pivots open to reveal a secret passageway. This was the inspiration the client had in mind for their walk in robe - albeit with a modern update in materials. With his background in set construction, Durwin was able to nut out the detail to make it work. Panels of top grade Russian Birch plywood were mounted to the whole wall behind the bed, creating a feature texture. Crisp black shadow lines created a visual pattern whilst cleverly being used to conceal the wardrobe doors, which sit perfectly, flush along side the other ply panels. Client Georgia says, 'I still joke every time I show anyone my bedroom that the builder forgot to include a wardrobe. I think there's a child inside that loves the sense of delight and surprise at the discovery of the hidden door. I really didn't want the typical 'room within a room' feel so many wardrobes have, so this was the perfect solution'.
